Wangjiagou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The Wangjiagou Formation was erected by the Shanxi Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1989. The section for the designation is from Zhonggulou to Caohuan of the Zhongzhuangpu township of Hunyuan County, Shanxi. [There is also a "Wangjiagou Fm" in Gansu (Devonian); but not used in this Lexicon.]
Lithology and Thickness
The Wangjiagou Formation is mainly represented by a set of purple red and gray white sedimentary rocks intercalated with volcanic rocks and pyroclastic rocks, which is roughly divided into two members. Lower member is dominated by purple red sandy mudstone with basalt. Upper member is built up by gray white rhyolitic volcanic breccia, tuff and rhyolite. It is 262.2 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base of the formation marked by purple red sandy mudstone with light gray sandy mudstone is distinguished from the underlying Zhongloupo Fm marked by gray green thick-bedded conglomerate with sandy mudstone. The Wangjiagou Formation lies conformably on the underlying strata.
Upper contact
The top is bounded by the appearance of light gray red and gray white conglomerate with gravel-bearing sandy mudstone at the base of the Caohuan Fm. The Wangjiagou Formation lies unconformably under the Caohuan Formation.
Regional extent
The present formation is only distributed in the Wangjiagou-Caohuan area of the Zhongzhuangpu township of Hunyuan County of northeast Shanxi.
